Flüstergewürz

a priori

Traces

For Flüstergewürz I collaborated with my late mother and people from her community. My hometown is famous for its gingerbread. I replaced the ingredients of the original recipe, first commercially made in my hometown in the 14th century, with ingredients indigenous to the American continent and called it chilibread. My mom and some members of her community baked it and I used it as currency in exchange for stories.

a priori is my reaction to a dream I had one night about my first boyfriend's mother. I searched for him online and told him about the dream. After decades of being out of touch, we talked about our pasts, and eventually he told me about his family's secret and why it was concealed from him.

Traces documents the remnants of cooking fentanyl. The black residue forms evidence of the use of this deadly synthetic opioid. The anonymous “drawings” vary, from carefully-executed lines, to quick, haphazard strokes. The wet plate process allows for grimy, gritty-looking images that emphasize the haste of drug abuse in public areas in cities everywhere.
